Games veterans Schwartzs CrossFit Melbourne continued to dominate this regional, taking first in Event 3 while Zaks Pack East Tamaki’s 3rd place performance moved them into second place overall.
CrossFit Brisbane was the only team from heat to finish the event, with a time of 19:06. CrossFit Rocks took heat 2 with a time of 18:47, beating out RAW Commando by a few seconds. In heat 3, overall leaders Schwartzs CrossFit Melbourne’s first female established a lead and the first to the finish mat. Schwartzs, Zaks Pack East Tamaki and CrossFit Loaded were in the clear early on thanks to the first male and female athletes. With three athletes done, Schwartzs and CrossFit Loaded were neck and neck in the event. But Zaks Pack East Tamaki made up time and was in the lead as their final male athlete started his shot of 30 wall ball shots, with Schwartz’s last male athlete straining to catch up. A slow cycle time and a few no reps enabled Schwartzs to overtake them for the lead, and so it remained, with the very experienced Schwartzs team taking the event in 17:57. Such were the mistakes made by Zaks Pack East Tamaki’s last athlete that CrossFit Loaded was able to sneak in and take the 2nd spot at 18:08. Zaks Pack East Tamaki took third with a time of 18:43.

Event 5 begins 2 minutes after this event ends.
Injustice Crew lifted the most to collect the Event 4 win while Zaks Pack East Tamaki earned their third consecutive top 3 finish to stay second in the overall standings.
Early on, in heat 1, there was a 225 lbs. lift for CrossFit Brisbane. Siberian Bears’ male athlete power snatched 225, making it look easy. Their last male athlete missed 245 twice. In heat 2, you saw different strategies. Some teams sent out their male athletes first. The other teams decided to start light with their female athletes and build from there. CrossFit Rock’s first athlete, a male, hit 225 on his second attempt during the opening window. CrossFit North Head’s female athlete snatched 135, a weight smoothly bested by ten pounds by two female athletes from CrossFit Rocks. Their last female athlete snatched 165 to help bring them a 3rd place finish in the event. CrossFit Bagus’s male athletes snatched 225 and 245 to help their team tie for 3rd overall in the event. In heat 3, Callum Gifford from Zaks Pack East Tamaki led the charge with a lift of 225 lbs. as the team collected 2nd place in the event. David Turner from CrossFit Active calmly loaded and then comfortably snatched 255. The biggest lift of the day on the team side went to CrossFit Athletic’s Kurt Foggo who dropped low to snatch 275 like it was nothing.

CrossFit HPU took advantage of a blistering start by their first two athletes to win Event 5. In the race for qualifying spots to Carson, Schwartzs CrossFit Melbourne continued to go from strength to strength, this time by showing their gymnastic ability and taking third in the event to stay atop the standings. CrossFit Athletic’s second-place in the event kept them comfortably within the qualifying spots as well.
In heat 1, CrossFit Brisbane was the first team to get half their team to the finish mat. CrossFit EKB’s fourth athlete caught Brisbane’s, and the two teams were neck and neck with two athletes to go. CrossFit Brisbane’s pulled away, their last two athletes clearly better at this skill than the last two athletes for CrossFit EKB and CrossFit CSTL, and they became the only team to finish with a time of 5:58. In heat 2, CrossFit Rock’s first two athletes, a male and female, were both high level gymnasts and built a sizable lead. They slowed down with their final two athletes, which allowed Reebok CrossFit Frankston to catch up, but were able to edge them out 5:39 to 5:44 and take 5th in the event. In heat 3, CrossFit HPU’s first two athletes, both males, went out very fast but it was Range of Motion who got 5 of 6 athletes to the finish mat first. Despite this, their last athlete struggled on the handstand walk, allowing CrossFit HPU to overtake them and win the event. Two other teams, CrossFit Athletic and Schwartzs CrossFit Melbourne, were able to take advantage of this slower athlete as well, and they finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Event 3

1-mile run
50 overhead squats (135 / 95 lb.)
100 GHD sit-ups
150 double-unders
50 sumo deadlift high pulls (135 / 95 lb.)

Matt Reilly became the first man in the world to finish Event 3 while Rob Forte overcame a slow start to finish third in the workout and maintain his lead at the top of the leaderboard.
Heat 1 featured several athletes who went deep into the workout, with Kieran Hogan getting 38 reps of the box jump overs. Ben Garard and Brandon Swan got the farthest in heat 2, the former got 60 box jump overs while the latter got 38. Garard’s performance would stand until the last heat when Matt Reilly took over. Khan Porter seized the lead going into the GHD sit ups, but it was Reilly and Kyle Frankenfeld who made it to the jump rope first. Reilly was smooth on the doubles and at a listed 220 lbs. he began to rip through the sumo deadlift high pulls with quick singles. For a tall man, he was quick and light on the box jump overs. Frankenfeld gave chase in earnest but he couldn’t catch Reilly who electrified the crowd by finishing the event, with 10 seconds to spare. Rory Boyden accelerated on the box jumps overs and ended up in second, only 11 reps away from completing this devastating chipper.
Reilly said he didn’t strategize the workout at all going in. “The run was very difficult,” he added. “I just had to move. Don’t stop moving. The crowd helped so much.”

Event 4
For time:
Handstand walk 250 ft.
Time cap: 3 minutes
Event 5 begins 1 minute and 40 seconds after this event ends.
Kevin Manuel gained a measure of redemption on the competition floor in Event 4. After finishing 41st in the handstand walk in last year’s regional, he showed up in heat 3 and raced past all the other competitors for the win. Brandon Swan’s 2nd place finish in the event was part and parcel of a comeback begun in Event 3. One of the favorites coming in, Swan had a horror show of a Friday but he looked to be on comeback trail on Day 2.
Ant Haynes won the first heat with a time of 2:27. In heat 2, Brandon Swan outraced Zeke Grove to take the heat and the event lead, with a time of 1:56. In heat 3, Kevin Manuel took over the top time of the day, showing vast improvement in spite of his height and his past weakness with the movement (41st in last year’s regional handstand walk). His time of 1:48 would not be bested by the top overall competitors in heat 4, though Rob Forte and Dean Linder-Leighton would vie for that second spot. In the end, Forte beat Linder-Leighton by only a second and was only tenths of a second slower than Swan in second place.
Results
1. Kevin Manuel (1:48)
2. Brandon Swan (1:56)
3. Rob Forte (1:56)

5. Zeke Grove (1:58)
Event 5
1-rep-max snatch
Each athlete will have two 20-second windows to attempt the lift with 80 seconds rest between windows.
Chad Mackay is known for his snatching and in Event 5 he didn’t disappoint, executing two lifts with precision and poise to take the event win. Remarkably, Brandon Swan completed his Day 2 fightback with a second consecutive 2nd-place finish, which saw him climb the ranks impressively. He now sits 3rd place overall after a disastrous start to the weekend.
In heat 1, Yong min Kang and Young Hoon Choi landed a snatch of 246 lbs. In heat 2, Zeke Grove’s first attempt was good at 247 lbs. Fiodor Serkov and Joshua Santhou both hit 255 on their first lifts. Brandon Swan’s 260 during his second window was enough to bring a smile to his face after having suffered some adversity so far in the competition. Ben Garard then hit 256 lbs. In heat 3, Chad Mackay hit 245 with ease on his first lift, a lift equaled by Scott Hutchison on his first try as well. Kevin Manuel, after glory on the handstand walk, cramped up on the snatch and missed twice before finally saving himself in the second window with a snatch of 235 lbs. On his second lift, Mackay was textbook in lifting 267 lbs. It was good enough for the event win. In heat 4, overall leader Rob Forte’s 246 put him in a tie for 11th in the event. Khan Porter’s 258 tied him for third in the event and put the Games veteran firmly in second place overall at the close of Day 2.

Denae Brown proved her engine was elite as she not only won Event 3 but blasted the world record set last weekend by Emily Bridgers. Kara Webb was over a minute slower but nevertheless maintained her grip on the first overall spot.
In heat 1, no athletes made it past the sumo deadlift high pulls. In heat 2, April Hering became the first athlete to make it to the box jumps overs, with 10 total. Harriet Roberts did five reps better in heat 3. In heat 4, given her endurance background and proficiency in the longer workouts, Amanda Allen was out to make a statement. She was first off the True Form runner but Kara Webb was right behind her and actually started the overhead squats before her counterpart. Denae Brown was a monster on the GHD sit ups and took over the lead from Webb. From then on, it was a two-athlete race as Brown and Webb looked to become the first women in the region to complete the workout. Brown actually went a few steps better. Her speed on the box jump overs enabled her to blow out of the water the world record time set by Emily Bridgers in the Atlantic region the week prior. Brown’s time of 24:31 was a good 22 seconds fasters than Bridgers’. Webb came in second and finished under the time cap with a time of 25:41.
Brown said, “I’m pretty exhausted after that. I wonder why! It was disgusting the whole way through from start to finish. I kind of like those long chippers. There’s something that just makes you push hard and you have to really dig deep.”

Event 4
For time:
Handstand walk 250 ft.
Time cap: 3 minutes
Event 5 begins 1 minute and 40 seconds after this event ends.
Alethea Boon would have taken the event record but for a miscue on the last few feet of the handstand walk. Still, her performance was more than good enough for an event win.
In heat 1, Amy Alessi set the standard early with a time of 2:31, good enough for 9th overall in the end. April Hering was six seconds faster in heat 2. Heat 3’s Andrea Miller took the event lead with a time of 2:00, but it was in heat 4 where the fastest on their hands came out to play. Sammy Wood came out fast, in a dead heat with Alethea Boon on the first leg of the race. Booth then pulled away from everyone and was on pace to break the event record set by Camille Leblanc-Bazinet the week before. She looked to have beaten it as she did a forward roll after crossing the finish line and headed for the finish mat. But her judge called her back for coming down too early from her handstand, and Boon ended up finishing two seconds slower than Leblanc-Bazinet, with a time of 1:45. Wood came in at 1:54.

2. Sammy Wood (1:54)

1-rep-max snatch
Each athlete will have two 20-second windows to attempt the lift with 80 seconds rest between windows.
Kara Webb, Tia-Clair Toomey and Andrea Miller were the stand-out lifters in Event 5, with Webb besting both Toomey and Miller by five pounds to take the win.
Both Gemma Lee and Gyeonghae Shin snatched 145 lbs. in heat 1. April Hering hit 157 in heat 2 during her second window and Emma Hissey snatched 155. In heat 3, Andrea Miller was textbook in her first lift, the heaviest of the day, of 166 lbs. She went 10 pounds better in the second window, to tie for second in the event. In heat 4, Justine Beath lifted 165 lbs. during her second window, good enough for 5th overall. After suffering her worst performance on the weekend so far on the handstand walk (11th place), Kara Webb opened with 176 lbs. on the snatch, which went up smoothly, though she walked forward a step with the barbell overhead. Sammy Wood missed 166 lbs. on her first try but showed no hesitation in trying again, this time resting at the bottom until she was comfortable enough to stand with it. Tia-Clair Toomey, an experience lifter, was smooth in her second window, her 176 lbs. enough to earn her second in the event. On her second lift, Webb looked warmed up and she confidently snatched 181 lbs. to give her a third event win of the weekend. Alathea Boon, after missing both attempts during the opening window, hit 147 during the second window to keep her Games’ dreams alive.
