2015 East Regional Recap: Day 1
2015 East Regional Recap: Day 1

TEAMS

Event 1
410-lb. partner deadlifts
Synchronized chest-to-bar pull-ups
MF pair 1 completes 45 reps
MF pair 2 completes 27-18 reps
MF pair 3 completes 21-15-9 reps
Time cap: 20 minutes
Event 1 has proven to be all strategy, a workout that necessitates not only a plan A but a plan B. As the athletes mediated the unevenly weighted deadlifts and the synchronized pull-ups, even some of the best teams had their communication break down, their rep schemes shatter, and their plans disintegrate. Games veterans CrossFit New England saw their early lead undermined by a communication break down that cost them multiple reps on the pull-ups. For many teams the pull-ups became a no-rep nightmare. The different arm lengths made kipping pull-ups a dangerous feat as male and female partner attempted to maintain the same pace. The butterfly pull-ups were far more effective but as the grip strength started to fade, especially for the partners going back and forth to the deadlifts, plan B became necessary. Fiternity, coming into the weekend as favorites, proved to have the best plan, sneaking past the heat leaders to finish with a time of 15:01. Pro1 Montreal finished on their heels with a time of 15:04. CrossFit Plateau 2 fought through some no reps throughout the competition and came in at 15:41. In heat 2, Lusine CrossFit Taschereau dominated their heat, their final female athlete literally pushing her counterpart across the finish line to come in at 15:45. CrossFit New England struggled through their communication issues and still managed to finish strong at 15:49.
When Fiternity were asked about their strategy going in to the first workout of the weekend, team captain Mike Abgarian admitted “We time capped this workout three times in practice. We had an original plan of putting our better deadlifters together our better pullupers together, and then it just worked out to a last minute thing, sitting around our kitching table crunching numbers and timing our rest to the second – spot on movement, everthing planned out. It’s all-out from here.” That plan worked as viewers watched Abgarian check his watch as he timed the rest with his partner, Miwa Andrus, motivating and pacing her through the chest to bar pull-ups, while the anchor team flew through their rounds of 21-15-9 and pushed their team to a first place win to start the weekend.

Event 2
175 snatches (75 / 55 lb.)
25 rope climbs
115 thrusters (115 / 75 lb.)
Time cap: 25 minutes
Athlete order: MMM then FFF
Event 2 had three parts, starting with an assault of 150 reps of light snatches, followed by 25 rope climbs, and closed out by 115 reps of moderately weighted thrusters for the three male athletes and followed by their female teammates. This workout came down to the male athletes’ speed on the snatches and the female athletes’ speed and efficiency on the rope climbs. These athletes learned from the mistakes of last week, drastically cutting down the no-reps from the new rule regarding rope climbs. The new rule states that instead of dropping straight down from the top of the rig, athletes for safety reasons were required to demonstrate control on the descent until they reached the 9 ft. mark on the rope. The teams adjusted and we saw the men and ladies sliding quickly down the ropes. In heat 2 CrossFit New England Courage broke the event record set last week by Back Country Black, racing in at 19:01. However, that record was broken again in heat 3 by their in-house rivals CrossFit New England. New England and Fiternity set a blistering pace throughout the workout. After a fall by Fiternity on the thrusters, CrossFit New England was able to push ahead for a time of 18:37. Fiternity followed them in at 18:53. Unable to beat CrossFit New England Courage’s time in heat 2, Pro1 Montreal took fourth with 19:09 and Operation Lando TeamDO placed fifth with 19:41. Both teams from CrossFit New England are in the top five after day one and will be going head to head as the heats are restructured tomorrow. Lusine CrossFit Taschereau are only three points away from fifth. CrossFit Milford finds themselves in seventh place, a good place to be but an all too familiar place on the precarious bubble, seventeen points out as they head into day two.

Five athletes in the East crossed the finish line before the previous event record, setting a blistering pace for Hero day.
In the men’s battle in the East during Hero WOD, Randy, there was no time to put down the bar as once again the event records from the previous week have been smashed. The final heat moved so quickly that a second of time meant the difference of three places. The muscle snatch proved to be the fastest today, as Alex Vigneault muscled through his 75 snatches and eked his way across the finish line only a second before Mathew Fraser, who stayed consistent with power snatches throughout the event. When Vigneault was asked about his strategy to get through Randy he said it was to “go hard on the first fifty and sprint the last 25.” Vigneault’s crushing pace was not enough to get first, however, as South’s Dominic Maurici’s 2:34 record set last week was destroyed by 10 seconds as Zachary Moran, in heat 3, crossed the finish line in 2:24. The pain was written on Moran’s face in the last twenty-five reps but he refused to put the bar down. Vigneault took second place but Mathew Fraser, only a second behind Vigneault, was also tenth of a second behind Paul Tremblay, who beat Fraser to the finish line in a foot race, leaving the heir apparent in fourth place after one event. James Koslakowski took fifth place with a time of 2:32.

After a rough start, Spencer Hendel made a comeback in event 2 taking first by a large margin. While in true Froning fashion, Mathew Fraser sits in second place after consistently placing fourth and fifth in the events of day one.
In the second Hero WOD of the day, athletes by and large went unbroken on the thrusters, actually using thrusters as a rest. However, even the best athletes found themselves staring at the rope, no doubt willing their arms to move as they took on twenty-seven rope climbs. Many athletes found themselves in an unusual position, bodies hunched over, hands on their knees, as they physically and mentally tried to prepare themselves to reengage with the rope.
From heat 1, Pascal Baillargeon took first in his heat with a time of 9:00.1, which went untouched in heat 2. However, in heat 3 Spencer Hendel would put up a new time of 7:28.9 after he cruised through the rope climbs, using his height to his advantage. He might have even broken the event record except for a costly no rep on the second rope climb of the round of six. No reps started coming into play as fatigued arms caused numerous athletes to drop off the rope before they had reached the required black line. In heat 4, the athletes stepped up their game. They were unable to reach Hendel’s time but four of the top five athletes for this event emerged from this heat. Cody Mooney, one of the few gloveless athletes, took first in the heat and second overall with a time of 8:04. Austin Malleolo was gunning for second in the heat with a time of 8:12.7 but he didn’t see Alex Vigneaunt, who got off his last rope climbs at the same time and sprinted down the floor to claim second by two tenths of second (8:12.5). Mathew Fraser seemed to struggle on the rope climbs, looking around at the other athletes as well as the rope in between attempts, but still managed to take fifth at 8:48.8 and kept himself at the top of the leaderboard for day 1.

And the records keep falling as Kaleena Ladeairous passes Samantha Briggs’ previous event record for Randy.
There were some surprising results in event 1 for the ladies as three of the top five finishers were not from the final heat. In fact every heat was represented as the female athletes took on Randy. In heat 1, Carolyne Prevost set the bar early with a time of 2:43.8. In the second heat, Kelly Munroe set a blazing time of 2:41.9. Jessa Lemoine would take heat 3 with a time of 2:45.3. Each of these ladies would place in the top five but it was in the final heat that Kaleena Ladeairous dominated the other competitors. Her form may not have been pretty but the results were beautiful, giving her in first place in the event and stealing the event record from Samantha Briggs by just over a second. Carol-Ann Reason-Thibault followed Ladeairous with the time of 2:45, putting her in fourth place going in to event 2.
When asked if anything special went through her mind during hero WODs, Ladeairous said: “If these men can die in our honor, I can hold on to a bar for two minutes. You’ve got to put it into perspective.”

1. Kaleena Ladeairous (2:26.7)
2. Kelly Munroe (2:41.9)

Athletes approached their bars quite differently for Tommy V than for Randy, the previous Hero WOD, but the bars were not the threat in this workout. It was the rope climbs that, once again, proved the ultimate hurdle for the female athletes. In heat 2 the cameras focused on the battle between Sacha Adkins and Kelly Munroe, while Chloe Gauvin-David would take heat 2 with a time of 11:10.5 even after getting caught in the rope on her final rep – costing her precious seconds. Her time would be bested in heat 4 but Gauvin-David hung on to fourth place. In heat 4 the gymnasts led the way. Dani Horan and Michele Letendre both have gymnastics background that played to their advantage. Dani Horan, finishing in ninth in event 1, would take first in event 2 with a time of 10:04. Horan said that her goal was “not to go to failure but flirt with it.” Horan remained smooth, steady, and consistent throughout the workout, giving her the victory. While Michele Letendre’s small stature at 5’1” was questioned going in to the event, she packed a big punch, flying up and down the rope and redeeming her seventh place finish from event 1 with a second place (10:27.5). Kelley Jackson took third with 10:38.9 and Jennifer Smith sprinted into fifth with 11:11.3.
At the end of day 1, only three points separate the top four athletes. As for the fifth and final spot, Carol-Ann Reason-Thibault is holding it today but it looks like she is going to have to fight off Kelley Jackson, Kari Pearce, and Jessa Lemoine if she wants to keep it.

2. Michele Letendre (168 pts)
3. Kaleena Ladeairous (167 pts)
4. Kelley Munroe (166 pts)
