USAW University Nationals Disaster? Not So Fast.
This past weekend at the 2015 University Nationals, we saw some really amazing things happen including Mattie Rogers setting 8 American Records and Alex Lee setting a new American Record and qualifying for the World Team.

Except something really odd happened: no one was drug tested. At National level meets it's common protocol for all record breaking lifters and podium spots to be tested by USADA in order to validate the lifts and records. Several of the lifters who set new records at the 2015 University Nationals reported expecting to be tested and waiting backstage after their lifts only to be left high and dry.

This is an unusual experience and many of the lifters feared their records or qualifying spots wouldn't count because of this lapse in testing. This could be disasterous as it would erase some really amazing performances and change the competitive career for several weightlifters.

Phil Andrews, Director of Events and Programming for USA Weightlifting, had this to say on the matter:

"USADA, US Anti-Doping Agency, were requested to test the event, and declined to do so (as is their right). I can provide evidence to prove these facts, both in their event request system and via email when I appealed that fact.

This will absolutely not affect records or totals set during the event as all athletes were still eligible for drug testing (in theory, USADA could have shown up un-announced and still tested).

We have done our due diligence in requesting USADA to attend. USADA has final say on all drug testing matters pertaining to Olympic sport.

The athlete(s) should not suffer due to USADA’s refusal to test this competition (and they were made aware it was a World Team selection event)."
