Playing Games: The Year We Went In Dark

It's the day before the CrossFit Games start and this is definitely the least we've known about the events this close to the events. Here's a breakdown of what we know and what it might mean:

6 known events

The Swim

500m ocean swim for time.

All 80 athletes will swim at the same time. Castro billed it as a "pure swim."

Murph

For time:
1 mile run
5 rounds -
20 pull ups
40 push ups
60 squats
1 mile run
*athletes will wear a weight vest the whole time

Faster than last year, easier on the athletes, and easier to follow for the spectators. Win, win, win.

The Clean Ladder

10 squat cleans (245/165) by 2:00
8 squat cleans (265/180) by 4:00
6 squat cleans (285/195) by 6:00
4 squat cleans (305/205) by 8:00
2 squat cleans (325/215) by 11:00

Similar to the snatch ladder from Regionals.

Event 11

280' handstand walk

A lengthy handstand walk for time across the soccer stadium.

Event 12

Shuttle run

Old school field sport shuttle run.

Event 13

The "Plow"

Pull the sled twice.

And that's it. Castro pulled together the best athletes in the world and at the moment they all expected to get some reveals and gave them nothing.

This is classic Dave Castro. As the Games grow, there's less and less room for showmanship like this, and it's all part of the show for to Castro to show up to the first athlete dinner (which is historically where big announcements are made) and tell the athletes they'll go through the hardest Games ever only to give them barely any details on some relatively pedestrian sounding workouts.

If this will be the toughest Games yet and the events we know about aren't that brutal sounding, then we're probably in for some awesome surprises over the next few days.

So we only know part of what the athletes will go through ("20%" according to Dave Castro), but the second athlete dinner tonight gave more details.
