Everyone Needs A Friend Like Tosa Brooks
Everyone Needs A Friend Like Tosa Brooks
CrossFit's Chandler Smith has a rap song about him that his friend Tosa Brooks made to motivate him after losing his finger.
'Real friends, how many of us?' - Kanye West
A while back I stumbled upon a little video on YouTube titled 'The Warno'.
As you can see the video features someone we all know and love, Chandler Smith. The former Army wrestler and current active military serviceman lost the tip of his left ring finger back in February of this year.
News broke right before the start of the 2017 Reebok CrossFit Season, Smith was devastated, 'Not really sure what comes next for me. Sorry to the sponsors, fans, coaches and friends who were expecting big things.'.
I can only imagine what type of headspace Smith must have been in at that time. As a fan, I know I was super bummed.
Circling back now to the video above, at first Armen and I thought that Chandler himself was rapping. However, upon further research I found this was not the case. The man dropping bars about Training Think Tank's Max El Hag and Chandler's discipline in the gym is one Tosa Brooks. Who at this moment should be nominated for 'Bro of the Year'.
Brooks is one of Smith's old college buddies that Chandler says, 'Knew about the struggle and pity party I had after the finger deal.'
When I asked Brooks why he made the song he wrote back, "His journey in CrossFit has been such a big inspriation to me because like him, I'm pursuing a career that is separate from the Army (as a hip hop artist). The way he attacks every single workout is exactly how I try to attack music. So I wanted to make a song that would do 2 things: #1 pump him up to keep working hard while deployed, and #2 motivate other people to get in the gym and make themselves better. In my mind, there's no better role model to follow than him."
Brooks surprised Smith with the song, dropping the video out of nowhere to motivate him. Chandler said, "It definitely reminded me of the fact that I'm repping for a lot of folks and helped me get going again!"
We all need a friend like Tosa Brooks in our life.
