Sara Sigmundsdottir Leads Preliminary CrossFit Open Leaderboard

We have previously looked at the men’s side of the Open leaderboard to see who would be advancing to the 2019 CrossFit Games. Now it’s the women’s turn. The female side of the field has been interesting in its own right, and we need to take a deep dive to see who will be moving on to Madison.

Keep in mind that the results won’t be official until the organizers announce the winners, top 20, and special invites on May 1. For now, this is all unofficial but is still considered likely by many experts in the fitness community.

1st – Sara Sigmundsdottir

If everything stays as is, Sigmundsdottir will be the 2019 Open Champion. The Icelandic superstar also won the Open back in 2017. While she is on the top of the leaderboard, she actually didn’t win a single workout throughout the Open this year. She placed well in all five, and in the end consistency paid off.

She previously won the Strength in Depth UK Sanctional to earn a ticket to the Games, but the Open win takes precedence so now that qualification would get passed down to the runner-up of the event, which is Jamie Greene. We’ll get back to that a little later.

While Sigmundsdottir may soon be a two-time Open winner, she has yet to win the title of Fittest on Earth. Maybe this year will be the year she breaks through.

2nd – Annie Thorisdottir

The two-time Fittest Woman on Earth and Sigmundsdottir’s fellow countrywoman started out the Open finishing third in 19.1 but that would be her best result. She hadn’t won a Sanctional nor did she win her national championship since Sigmundsdottir finished ahead overall but this finish is certainly good enough to help her move on to attempt winning a third title.

3rd – Kristin Holte

Holte finished the Open strong by placing fourth in 19.4 and third in 19.5. She is also now Norway’s national champion. If all stands as is, this will be her sixth trip to the Games and she is currently the seventh Fittest Woman on Earth based on last year’s result. Third in the Open would be her best finish in her seven years of participating.

4th – Jamie Greene

Remember when we discussed Greene taking that qualification from the UK Sanctional? Well, it turns out she won’t need it either since she finished fourth overall in the Open and is the New Zealand national champ. Her best week was 19.4 where she finished second overall. That SiD spot would then go down to Dani Speegle who finished third at that event. But wait…

5th – Dani Speegle

It turns out she won’t be using it either. Speegle currently is in fifth place overall and the leading American, so she would take the American championship. We’re not sure at this point how far down the Sanctionals qualification would go since the top three at an event all earned Open spots but that can be covered another time. Here’s the rest of the top 20 for the Open.

6th – Brooke Wells

6th   (tie) – Tia-Clair Toomey (current Fittest Woman on Earth)

8th – Kari Pearce

8th  (tie) – Amanda Barnhart

10th Carol-Ann Reason-Thibault

11th – Mekenzie Riley

12th – Karin Freyova

13th – Kristine Best

14th – Katrin Davidsdottir

15th – Carolyne Prevost

16th – Emma McQuaid

17th – Danielle Brandon

18th – McKenzie Flinchum

19th – Jadzia Truszkowski

20th – Brooke Haas

Cutoff Extended

As with the men’s leaderboard, some of these athletes will be taking qualifications through winning their national championships. That includes Sigmundsdottir, Holte, Greene, Speegle, Toomey, Reason-Thibault, Freyova, and McQuaid. There are also a couple athletes who won’t take invites for reasons not yet known. So the cutoff is actually after 30th. Here is who makes that list.

21st – Alexis Johnson

22nd – Samantha Briggs

23rd – Alessandra Pichelli

24th – Jacqueline Dahlstrom

25th – Chantelle Loehner

26th – Hayley Murillo

27th – Feeroozeh Saghafi

28th – Tasia Percevecz

29th – Melissa Eramo

30th – Kristi Eramo

Outside But Actually Inside

There are some notable names who aren’t on this list. The 2018 Games runner-up Laura Horvath currently sits in a tie for 41st but is the highest ranking athlete in Hungary so she would be in thanks to winning her national title.

The 2014 Fittest Woman on Earth, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, didn’t finish in the top 100 of the Open, but she is going to the Games in another way. She will be replacing Jamie Greene on Team ROMWOD/WIT, which is going to Madison thanks to winning Wodapalooza in January.

For any other athletes not on this list or that haven’t won a Sanctional, the remaining events between now and this summer will be the only way to move on to the big stage. This coming weekend is the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit Challenge in Washington, D.C. That is where we will find out who the next athletes are to punch their ticket to the big one.
