Here are the most impressive things we saw at the West Regionals this past weekend:
Vale impressively maneuvered his way through his second squat snatch at 265 lbs. It looked as if Cole Sager would take the event win for the heat, but Vale’s save put him ahead of Sager and gave him the event win for third place. It was his highest event finish of the weekend.
Tia Wright finished the Open 26th in her region, which put her in the first heat of competitors on the first day of Regionals. 10th- and second-place event finishes on day one put her in first place, and the last heat for day two. She slid to fifth place at the end of day two, but held a spot for Carson up until the end of the final event. A 32nd-place finish in Event 7 dropped her to seventh place overall. It just goes to show that, while it’s possible to come in at the lowest seeding for Regionals and make your way up, it’s also possible to fall just as quickly.

Going into the final day, Sager’s average event finish was outside the top 10. He sat in 10th place at the end of day one, and ninth place at the end of day two. An incredible performance on Event 7—along with some not-so-incredible performances by competitors—was enough to put him in fifth place overall and punch his ticket to the Games.
In the last two years, Fikowski missed qualifying for the Games by a total of 3 points. This year marked his fourth Regionals appearance. Not only did he make the Games this year, but he took first and set a new event record on Event 6.
