Here are the most impressive things we saw at the West Regionals this past weekend:
May 23, 2016
The final day of West Regionals has come to a close. The calculations have been made, the chalk settled, and the 5 men, 5 women, and 5 teams who will represent the West Regional at the 2016 CrossFit Games have been decided. How did the day play out?
Atlantic Regional
The final event of the weekend arrived, and it was the last chance for a few athletes to wiggle their way into one of the top five spots. Going into the event, Mitch Wagner needed to win to secure his place, while Cody Anderson and Tyson Takasaki had to do very well (around the top two) to lock in their place. Cole Sager would seemingly need a miracle to crawl his way out of ninth. However, the rope climbs could work in any three of those athletes’ favor.

Legless rope climbs dashed the dreams of more Games hopefuls today in the West. Tia Wright started the weekend in the first heat—the lowest seeding for Regionals—and after day one, held a qualifying spot for Carson throughout the entire weekend. Going into Event 7, Wright was in fourth and poised to make her first trip to the Games, but a 32nd-place finish in the legless rope climb event dropped her to a disappointing seventh place overall. Another Games hopeful, Jenna Gracey, was a mere two points out from securing a qualifying spot before she also found herself on the outside looking in after a no-rep in the final round of rope climbs sealed her fate.
Only eight points separated fifth through eighth place at the West Regionals, and all eyes were on Cody Anderson (sixth place) and Cole Sager (ninth place).
Carleen Mathews continues to control the West with a first-place (and second-fastest of all Regionals thus far) finish in Event 6, which solidifies her spot in Carson. Margaux Alvarez, who climbed back into a qualifying spot yesterday, kept up with Mathews’ pace to finish just behind her. Margeaux historically does well in longer events, which showed once again in the chipper today. Abbott put up another good showing, finishing third and illustrating how well-rounded she has become.
The final event of the West Regional weekend was a race between CrossFit Fort Vancouver and Spokane Valley. If the two teams would have finished close, Fort Vancouver would have gone to Carson, so Spokane Valley not only needed to beat them, but they needed enough teams to finish between them in order to qualify.
Heading into Events 7 and 8, Boise CrossFit Rainbow had taken no lower than third in any event. The momentum kept going through the next two events. In Event 7, Boise lead in the beginning, but CrossFit Fort Vancouver set the new time to beat in the West: 6:52. Boise CrossFit Rainbow finished in second with a time of 7:00. It’s worth noting that the event record set by Diablo CrossFit Anejo out of the California Regional is 6:41, so while CrossFit Fort Vancouver’s performance wasn’t an event record, it was impressive nonetheless.

With day two closed, only one day remains for athletes in the West to punch their tickets to Carson. What happened on "moving day" at West Regionals?
Brent Fikowski is establishing his dominance in the West. If strength was once a weakness for Brent, he is showing it's a thing of the past after taking 3rd in Event 5. Event 5 featured 405lb. deadlifts. This follows his 2nd place finish on the heavy snatches from Day 1. With no finishes lower than 7th he is firmly atop the leaderboard with 2 events remaining.
It was an extremely tight race between Margeaux Alvarez and Carleen Mathews in Event 5. Mathews took the early lead but Margaux chipped away at it until she finally pulled ahead on the final round of running. It was obvious by Margeaux’s demeanor during the event that she knew this was her workout to win and she did just that. Mathews didn’t fall very far behind, finishing the event in 3rd place. Surprisingly, the 2nd place finish in Event 5 today came from 38 year old Joey Kimdon. Kimdon absolutely stunned today with a 1st place finish in Event 4 and 2nd in Event 5! Her performance has pulled her into 9th place overall 31 points out of a qualifying spot. Tia Wright dropped into 5th place after Event 5 with a 19th place finish, her lowest of the weekend so far. As we’ve seen in the previous Regional competitions thus far, the race is far from over. While it is anticipated that Mathews and Abbot will continue to pull away, the rest of the field will battle it out until the end.

Events 3 and 4 separated the field even further, putting familiar faces in the top positions.
