Rush Club 005: Dan Pela Vs. Sam Dancer

A natural athlete, Dan Pela has seemingly done it all. After playing football, baseball, and wrestling in high school, Pela walked on to the Northern Arizona University football team as a defensive lineman. He soon proved himself to be a valuable asset on the field, and earned a full ride scholarship as a three year starter.    A year and a half post graduation, Pela found himself wanting to get back in the competitive realm, and quickly discovered his talent in CrossFit.    Dan recently took to the Rush Club Stage where he competed against, and blew past, William Wood in a workout of burpees, cleans, and deadlifts. His win at RC004 granted him the opportunity to compete for the men’s heavyweight title on August 15, with only one man standing in his way, defending champ Sam Dancer.    We caught up with Dan to see how he’s preparing to take on the champ at Rush Club 005:  Only a few months ago, you made your debut at Rush Club 004, how’d it go?     My rush club debut was a really fun experience. I had been to all the previous Rush Club events starting from 001 on and it's such a fun atmosphere. I was nervous going into it but once the workout started I settled in and had fun with it.  What was your preparation/training like leading up to the competition?   My coach, Scott Porter, created a program designed specifically to improve the movements I would be doing in the workout. Training 5, sometimes 6 days a week for the month leading up to it.  What was the workout you competed? Did it play to your strengths?    15 bar facing burpees  15 hang power cleans 225#  15 bar facing burpees 15 front squats 275# 15 bar facing burpees 15 deadlifts 365#   It was a pretty brutal workout overall. The burpees get you breathing pretty heavy then you have to control that breathing to hit the heavy weights at each of the movements. I have pretty decent numbers with my lifts so I worked hard to improve my efficiency at the movements leading up to the event.    You blew past William Wood, finishing over a minute before he did. Going into the workout, did you know you’d finish with such a dominating win?   I did not know I would finish that much faster than him. The first time I attempted the workout, 4 weeks out, I finished almost 2 minutes past the time cap. I tried it again 2 weeks out and finished around 30 seconds under the cap. At the event, I finished more Han a minute under the cap. It felt good to see the improvement at the workout in such a short time. I went head to head with Billy in the finals of a local competition in September 2014 and he edged me out to take the top of the podium so it felt pretty good to get him on that one.    What was your experience like being crowned RC004 Champion in Celebrity Theater in front of so many fans?    It was a great feeling to have my hand raised after winning. It was acknowledgement that my hard work paid off. The crowd was awesome and made it so much fun to compete.    You’ll be competing against Sam Dancer in the title match up, are there any nerves knowing you’ll be going head to head with a Games’ athlete?    I know Sam is an incredible competitor and great person. I've watched him compete on a lot of big stages that I have yet to reach, so it is a bit daunting go against an athlete of his caliber. I know I've worked to put forth my best effort at 005 so I'm looking forward to the challenge of going against someone like him.  Your challenge this time includes deadliest, thrusters, pistols, power cleans, and shoulder to overheads, how are you feeling about the workout? What are your thoughts on the programming?   I like the workout idea for this one. Pistols are a tough movement for heavier guys to do so that's a big part of the challenge. The weights programmed on those movements are manageable and I love that there's some rest built in to the workout, us big guys like rest. Ultimately, I think it will come down to who can keep moving through the last segment of the workout and cycle the pistols fast and efficiently.  What have you been doing in preparation to compete against Sam?    I've been doing a lot of the same as I did for 004. Working the specific movements that are in the workout and trying to mimic the time domain and short rest to all our work capacity type training.  Are you going to win Rush Club 005?    I'll just say I've worked hard to get ready for it and I'm really looking forward to showing what I'm capable of. You will be able to watch Dan and Sam go head to head August 15, LIVE on FloElite.com! Related Articles:  Sara Urban To Defend Rush Club Heavyweight Title  Rush Club 005 Events Announced!

Jennifer Nobis-Dancer To Make A Run At Rush Club 005 Title

Jennifer Nobis-Dancer is no rookie when it comes to the competitive field. Through highschool, Dancer found her athletic calling in soccer and earned a scholarship to the University of Missouri. Post-graduation, she was recruited to play professional soccer in Sweden, and was later drafted by the Boston Breakers, an American league team out of the North East. After only a few years back on American soil, Dancer found herself called back to the Dallmelsvenslcan League in Sweden, where she continued to make a name for herself in the sport, becoming Player of The Year and top scorer in the league.  2012 was a year of tranisition. Due to years of physical damage as a result of competing at such a high level, Dancer made the decision to hang up her cleats and leave the field behind. With self preservation in mind, she returned to her home in Quincy, Illinois. It was only a short time later that the retired athlete found her calling in CrossFit.  With a year of CrossFit under her belt, Dancer qualified to the 2013 North Central Regional as an individual, finishing 19th overall. Not bad for a rookie debut. 2014 proved to have even more success. As a member of Team CrossFit Conjugate, Dancer earned a first place finish at the Central East Regional, punching her (and the team's) first ticket to Carson. CrossFit Conjugate finished the weekend as the Second Fittest Team On Earth, falling short only to the gladiators of CrossFit Invictus.  On May 29, Dancer began her weekend competing at the 2015 Central Regional in the women's individual division, her mind set on a trip back to California. A stacked field of Games' veterans proved this to be no easy task. After the three days of competition, she finished within the top 30 women, placing 29th overall.  Next Saturday (August 15th), Dancer will be competing head to head with current Rush Club Heavyweight Champ, Sara Urban, at Celebrity Theater. We caught up with Jenn to see how preparation for Rush Club 005 has been going:  You competed a couple months ago at the 2015 Central Regionals, since that weekend, what has training looked like? Did you take a break?   Training has been very off and on with us since regionals has ended. We took about two weeks off completely right after competing. Our goal was to take one week off and enjoy each other but then life happened and it continued to two weeks. We have never been so incredibly busy with our lives but we also haven't ever been so happy.    When Sam (Dancer) competed at Rush Club 001 last year, what did you think of the event? Did you want to compete yourself?     When Sam competed last year it was such a fun experience to get with a group of people and watch. I never thought I would get the opportunity to be apart of Rush Club. When AJ ask me I hesitated at first because I remember how nervous I was just watching Sam. But, hearing all the positive feedback from Sam and from my best friend Melissa's experience, I can't wait to experience it myself and enjoy the moment.   What has training/preparation looked like leading up to the weekend? Have you practiced the workout?   Training for Rush Club doesn't look any different than my regular training. I ran through the workout once just to see what it would feel like and so I can get a good strategy going into the event.    What are your thoughts on the workout? Does the programming play to your strengths or weaknesses?   When I saw the workout I had a huge relief. The movements are completely up my alley, but its also something different that I don't do a lot of in my training. We had to work with DBalls last year for The Games, but since then I haven't done much with that movement.    You’re going head to head with the current heavyweight title holder, Sara Urban. How do you think you’ll stack up against her?    Going up against Sara is no different than going up against anyone during a competition. I don't usually get too worked up with who I am going against, because my performance won't change. I am competing to WIN and to have a good time and if I worry about my component then I won't be able to enjoy the atmosphere of the competition.  You'll be able to watch these ladies throwdown August 15th, LIVE on FloElite.  Related Articles:  Sara Urban To Defend Rush Club Heavyweight Title  Rush Club 005 Events Announced!

Sara Urban Prepares To Defend Rush Club Title Against Nobis-Dancer

In only a matter of days, Sara Urban will go head to head with Jennifer Nobis-Dancer at Celebrity Theater at Rush Club 005 to defend her Female Heavyweight title. Urban competed at the inaugural Rush Club throwdown in 2014 where she claimed the crown, and has maintained it since.  Challenger Jennifer Nobis-Dancer is the owner of Q Town CrossFit in Quincy, Illinois, and is no stranger to the competition floor. Her team, CrossFit Conjugate, took second at the CrossFit Games in 2014, and she recently competed at 2015 Regionals as an individual, placing 29th overall. See her Rush Club 005 preparation HERE.  Sara gave us insight into her experience winning the RC001 heavyweight title, as well as training for Rush Club 005: What was it like competing in the inaugural Rush Club event?  I was completely taken back when I got the phone call from AJ, I wasn't expected it at all. It was such a honor and I am very grateful for the opportunity.  Fans were sitting 5 feet away from where you were competing, what was it like having the audience so close? Did it amp up the atmosphere?  Yea, that was crazy! I've never competed that close to the spectators, it was an experience for sure! It definitely amp'd up the atmosphere, the spectators were so close that you could hear the cheers. It was pretty cool! What was the workout? How did it go? Don't quote me on it but I believe it was a 5 min time CAP, complete 5 Rounds of 3 Snatch 115#, 5 OTB Burpees, and 7 Pull-Ups and in the remaining time left complete as many C&J at 155# as possible. Your score was the C&J. I think it went pretty well :0)  Do you think the movements involved played to your strengths?  I do! I was able to cycle a moderate barbell and had low rep BW movements. Describe your experience being crowned Champion? Does it feel a little like you’ve made history in Rush Club?  It was an awesome experience! I've been competing for awhile now and I've been blessed with the opportunity to be on the Regionals floor on a team, as well as individual, and I always tell people that Rush Club was one of the funnest/coolest experiences of my competitive career. I'd like to think so! No matter what happens I'll always be the first female Heavyweight Champ. At RC005, you’ll be competing against Jennifer Dancer. Are there any nerves knowing you’ll be going head to head with a Games’ athlete?  I don't know Jenn personally, but I've always admired her as an athlete and her accomplishments. Of course I have nerves going into the competition but they would be there no matter the person I was up against. I think knowing her accomplishments just motivates me!  Your workout includes a variety of movements, from handstand pushups to snatches. What do you think of the programming? Do the movements play to your strengths or weaknesses?  I'm actually pretty excited about the workout! I haven't had much experience with a 100# D-ball, we just don't have too many of those laying around our gym. With that being said I think the workout plays well to both, an object I'm not super familiar with but it's heavy and I like heavy! How have you been preparing for Rush Club 005?  I have, to the best of my abilities! Are you going to defend your Rush Club title? Yes.
