4 Things We Learned from the Central Regional

The 2016 CrossFit Games Regionals are over with and while we know who's going to the Games and how they compare, we've also learned some important things from the events themselves. Here are our takeaways from the Central Regional.

Only 12 Athletes Complete All Regional Events

Only 12 athletes completed all 7 of the 2016 Regional events uncapped. All 12 were men. 0 women were able to complete all of the events.

Central Men's Games Qualifiers Are...

Scott Panchik can call himself the Central Regional Champion again. His first event win of the weekend came right when he needed it. He was the first off the bar, and first off the rig, but Will Moorad wasn't giving up his chance at a qualify spot without a fight. He sat 29 points out of 5th place, and seemed likely to have the greatest chance of taking the final qualifying spot from Sam Dancer. Unfortunately his 2nd place finish wasn't enough, he finished the weekend in 6th.

And Then There Was One

None of the top 5 women could afford to make the wrong move going into the final day. Brooke Wells took the event win with an impressive time of 10:36. She moved through the burpee box jumps, and then put her foot down in the overhead squats. Going into the day she was only one point away from Jennifer Smith’s 2nd place position, that being said, the event win (and Smith’s 18th place finish) moved her up. She sits in 1st overall.

Central Team Games Qualifiers Are...

Going into the final day CrossFit Mayhem Freedom only needed to average 25th place finishes in the last two events to qualify for the Games. It's no surprise they finished much stronger than that. With an 11th place finish in Event 7, 3rd place finish in Event 8, and a 2nd place finish in Event 9 they finished the weekend in 1st overall, ticket to Carson in hand.

Four of the five qualifiers going into the final day of Central Regionals remain unchanged from the day before, however only one point separates 5th and 6th place.

Elisabeth Akinwale Injury Update

The crowd was surprised when Games veteran Elisabeth Akinwale's lane was empty at the start of Event 3. Then questions arose in no time when "WD" was posted next to her events on the leaderboard. The announcers let fans know it was related to a knee injury, but did not have any further details.

Jacob Heppner Isn’t Joking Around

Jacob Heppner went into day 2 in 13th and the look on his face before Event 3 started let everyone know he would put himself on top of the leaderboard where he belonged. He took the heat event win for Event 3 and took down the event record with it. Unfortunately, the record didn’t last long, it was broken again by Kevin Scholtz in the next heat, but a 2nd place finish worked in Heppner’s favor overall. Scholtz became the first athlete across all Regionals to complete the event in under 4 minutes. He then went on to take 27th in Event 4.

…11th to 1 Real Quick

Brooke Wells had some ground to make up going into day 2, and she did just that, and more. In Event 3 she was finished with her wall balls by around 3:15, and managed to complete all of the pull-ups in two complete sets. Had she not dropped down she would have undoubtedly taken the event record set by Annie Thorisdottir earlier in the morning. She finished the event in 4:35.88, less than one second shy of the event record of 4:35.24. The next closest time for Event 3 at Central Regionals was Nicole Holcomb with a time of 5:11.

Mayhem Freedom With 3 Event Wins After Day 2

After the second day at Central Regionals CrossFit Mayhem Freedom sits comfortable in 1st with three event wins and nothing lower than a 5th place finish. This makes Mayhem Freedom one of three teams to go into day 3 with three event wins. The other two being Team Soul in the Atlantic and Diablo CrossFit Anejo from California Regional. At the end of the day Mayhem Freedom sits 84 points above 2nd place, Three Kings Black. Their point total, 565, is the second highest amount of points of all teams across all Regionals. Boise CrossFit Rainbow out of the West had 570 points after day 2, but only had two event wins going into the final day. All the numbers just displaying how dominant of a performance Mayhem Freedom is displaying.
